Abstract

The infrared reflectance and transmittance of the ν11(a2u) fundamental of C6H6(s) for a film 1.26 microns thick have been measured. Optical expressions for thin films given by Heavens1 have been used to calculate the refractive index n and the absorption index k. Integration of k over the band gives an absolute intensity Γ=11.7±1.3cm2millimole−1, which is about 36% lower than the apparent intensity of 15.9. Comparison to results of other workers will be made.
