Abstract

The infrared reflectance and transmittance of the $\nu_{11} (a_{2u})$ fundamental of $C_{6}H_{6}(s)$ for a film 1.26 microns thick have been measured. Optical expressions for thin films given by Heavens$^{1}$ have been used to calculate the refractive index n and the absorption index k. Integration of k over the band gives an absolute intensity $\Gamma = 11.7 \pm 1.3 cm^{2} millimole^{-1}$, which is about 36\% lower than the apparent intensity of 15.9. Comparison to results of other workers will be made.
