Abstract
In the past the large reflectivity of metals at low temperatures had hampered detailed studies of the surface impedance in the far infrared spectral region. A novel transmission line sample geometry has been developed for such experiments in which the sample cross section is a spiral of metal foil embedded in a polyethylene spacer. The surface impedance of both superconducting and normal metals at $1.2^{\circ}K$ have been measured with a lamellar interferometer in the frequency region from 3 to $40 cm^{-1}$. The far infrared radiation was detected with a $He^{3}$ cooled $(0.4^{\circ}K)$ bolometer.
