Abstract

The infrared gas phase spectra of methylhydrazine $(NH_{2}NHCH_{3})$, $methylhydrazine-d_{3}-(ND_{2}NDCH_{3})$, and $methylhydrazine-d_{3}(ND_{2}NDCD_{3})$ have been measured from 33 to $4000 cm^{-1}$. The infrared and Raman spectra of the corresponding compounds in the liquid state have also been recorded. Assignments of the twenty-one normal vibrations will be given and discussed. The $CH_{3}$ and $NH_{2}$ torsional modes have been observed and, by assuming that a symmetrical threefold cosine potential governs both rotors, the barriers to internal rotation have been calculated to be 3.67 and $3.72 kcal mole^{-1}$, respectively. The intensity of the $3182 cm^{-1}$ line of $NH_{2}NHCH_{2}$ has been studied as a function of temperature. The $\Delta H^{\circ}$ for H-bond formation is found to be -418 cal mole$^{-1}$.
