Abstract

The far-infrared induced absorption spectra of $CH_{4}$ and $CD_{4}$ dissolved in liquid argon was studied using a Michelson interferometer. Both spectra consist of broad, featureless absorptions that have been assigned as rotational bands. The $CD_{4}$ spectrum is less broad and shifted to lower frequency. Since the lowest moment of methane is an octupole moment the inducing mechanism may be attributed to an octupole-induced dipole moment. As a result of the high density of the liquid state, the absorption is modified by three-body collisions and intercollisional correlations.
