Abstract

The interatomic potentials of the Rydberg states of HgNe were determined from the optical--optical double resonance spectra. The observed states were $^{3}\Sigma^{+}$ of $Hg(n^{3}S_{1})Nc(n=8,9,10), {^{1}}\Sigma^{+}$ of $Hg(n^{1}S_{0})Nc(n=7,8,9)$, and $^{3}\Sigma^{+}$ of $Hg(n^{3}D)Nc(n=6,7)$. The dependence of the interatomic distance on (i) the principal quantum number(n), (ii) the orbital angular momentum, and (iii) the spin angular momentum was investigated. The potentials of the Rydberg states were well-explained by the superposition of the ion core potential and the exchange interaction between the Rydberg electron and the rare gas atom. The rotational structures were also analyzed and the n-dependence of the spin-spin interaction was clarified.
