Abstract

The impact of Ohio National Guard activities at the prehistoric Newark Earthworks is described, both degradation of the earthworks and "restoration." The lack of any significant archaeological discoveries in or adjacent to the earthworks during this period (ca. 1891-1910) lends some credence to Prufer's "vacant ceremonial center" model.
