Abstract
“Measurements of the broadening and shift of the line Ca 6573 caused by pressures of up to one atmosphere of helium, neon, argon and krypton have been carried out wit the use of a grating spectrograph of resolving power about $3 \times 10^{5}$. In line with earlier results, these measurements show no agreements with the Lindholm-Foley theory of collision broadening and shift, if the inter-atomic potential is assumed to be $C_{6}/r^{6}$ where r is the distance between the two atoms. The Lindholm-Foley theory has been evaluated for the Lennard-Jones interatomic potential, $C_{12}/r^{12}-C_{6}/r^{6}$, and the experimental results used to calculate $C_{12}$ and $C_{4}$. The values of $C_{5}$ thus obtained show considerably improved agreement with theory, while those for $C_{12}$ show a reasonable from of dependence on atomic size.”
