Abstract
Ab Initio quantum chemistry calculations for a number of cluster models of the superconducting cuprates will be discussed. It will be argued that the optical gap in $La_{z}CuO_{4}$ is that of a ``traditional'' Mott insulator. Parameters describing an effective single band model will be suggested, and the close correspondence between the electronic excitations of the cuprates and those of the alternant polyenes in the narrow band limit will be stressed.
