Abstract

The effect of bond alternation is to shift transitions to the blue and to weaken them. This result can be seen from the nature of the transitions in the limit of zero alternation (cyclic polyene model) or complete alternation (exciton model). The height of the barrier to the alternation distortion is discussed as well as the experimental effects it should produce.
