Infrared studies of 2-cyanoethanol have demonstrated the existence of both trans and gauche isomers (about the C-C axis) with a small energy difference (500 cal/mole) between them.$\mathrm{<mrow\; data-mjx-texclass="ORD">1</mrow>}$ The microwave spectrum of 2-cyanoethanol has been examined and assignments have been made for the ground state of the trans isomer. In addition, some assignments consistent with a gauche form have been made. The orientation of the OH group in these isomers will be discussed.
