Abstract

James B. Baer describes his experiences as an undergraduate at The Ohio State University, particularly his involvement in Block O. Baer matriculated to OSU in the fall of 1964; in the spring of his freshman year, he joined Block O and later joined Pi Kappa Alpha, through which he participated in May Week bed races around the Oval. He also was involved in the intra-fraternity council, and student engineering societies, as well as the Sports Car Club and various intramural sports. Baer discusses his membership in Block O, which evolved from creating, distributing and maintaining the section's flash-card packages to being responsible for the Brutus Buckeye costume for home and away games, including OSU's trip to the 1969 Rose Bowl. As the expansion committee chairman, Baer was involved in expanding the Block from one to two sections and moving it to the north end of the stadium, and he explains the process that they went through to make it work. He also talks about computerizing the flash design process, and his year as president of the organization. Finally, he discusses his best and worst memories as a student, and his relationship with the University since graduation in 1969.
