Abstract
The rate of intramolecular internal conversion between two electronic levels is related to the square of the vibrational overlap ($S^{2}$) between the zero-point level of the upper state and an equienergetic vibrational level of the lower state. Small energy gaps are most effectively bridged by skeletal stretching (CC) quanta, large energy gaps by CH stretching (CH) quanta, and intermediate gaps by mixed CC and CH quanta. A rough empirical relationship emerges in which log (internal conversion rate) is inversely proportional to $S^{2}$. The latter quantity may be evaluated from the absorption spectra.
