Abstract
According to a recommendation of the International Association of Geodesy six baselines of lengths 480- 864 m had been measured in different countries in Europe and South America with the aid of a Väisälä light interference comparator for standardization of the geodetic length measurement devices, mainly of invar wires. In 1965 Ohio State University purchased a Väisälä comparator and the land for a standard baseline of length 500 m. The construction of the baseline was carried out in 1965-1966 and the interference observations in October-November 1966. The observations and reduction computations are described. The distances 125, 250 and 500 m were determined ten, five and three times, respectively. The length of the whole baseline was found to be 500 028.262±0.076 mm. This value is based on the lengths of the quartz meter standards determined in light waves at the Physikalisch- Technische Bundesanstalt Braunschweig and by Professor Väisälä.
