“The near infrared band spectrum of $VCl4$ vapor has been qualitatively interpreted, previously, in terms of a Jahn-Teller distortion of the molecule in the excited electronic state. The spectral studies have been extended to low temperatures. Results obtained for this band system over the temperature range $77\circ K$ to $300\circ K$ will be presented. Ultraviolet absorption spectra of $VCl4$, rigorously separated from $VOCl3$, will be reported and the spectra interpreted in terms of charge-transfer transitions.”
