Abstract

“The near infrared band spectrum of VCl4 vapor has been qualitatively interpreted, previously, in terms of a Jahn-Teller distortion of the molecule in the excited electronic state. The spectral studies have been extended to low temperatures. Results obtained for this band system over the temperature range 77K to 300K will be presented. Ultraviolet absorption spectra of VCl4, rigorously separated from VOCl3, will be reported and the spectra interpreted in terms of charge-transfer transitions.”
