Abstract
A detailed study of the polarization of phosphorescence in a series of chlorobenzenes in rigid organic solutions at $77^{\circ} K$ has been undertaken. Polarized excitation at various wavelengths in the structure $^{1}L_{b}$ band gives rise to polarized phosphorescence which is analyzed as a function of wavelength. The results for $D_{6h}$ and $D_{3h}$ are contrasted with those for $D_{2h}$ and $C_{2v}$. Given the assignment of the $^{1}L_{b}$ state and an understanding of its vibronic character, it is possible to relate the polarization of the phosphorescence to the molecular axes. These absolute polarizations are discussed in terms of the electronic and vibronic character of the emitting triplet state.
