Abstract

The fluorescence excitation spectrum of methyl salicylate in a free-jet environment has been obtained. Over 100 individual peaks have been observed in a $1500 cm^{-1}$ interval; several prominent progressions have been identified. This study represents the first observation of the detailed vibrational structure of this $\pi-\pi^{*}$ transition. The 0-0 band at $30052 cm^{-1}$ has a linewidth of $-2 \mbox{cm}^{-1}$, other features are similarly sharp, although some of the high-energy bands are considerably broader. Besides the sharp features, we have also observed the onset of an underlying continuum about $700 cm^{-1}$ above the origin, providing support for the existence of a fast nonradiative decay process similar to ``channel three’’ in benzene above a certain threshold energy. The emission spectra for several different excitation energies have also been obtained and compared.
