Abstract

The microwave spectra of six isotopic species of dimethyl ketene, $(CH_{3})_{2}C=C=O$, have been investigated. The number of rotational constants obtained is sufficient to calculate a r,-structure for the methyl groups. There is neither significant evidence for a deviation from $C_{3v}$ symmetry nor proof for a tilt of more than, perhaps, one degree. A number of medium- and high-J lines is split into symmetrical triplets due to the interaction of internal and over-all rotation. From the splittings the hindering potential for the internal methyl rotation has been determined as $(2066 \pm 50)$ cal/mole. The result will be compared with that for similar molecules.
