Abstract

This thesis seeks to investigate the medical surplus generation at OSUMC and other Columbus area hospitals. It describes the sources within a hospital that generate reusable medical product, discusses a rerouting plan for this durable surplus at OSUMC, and highlights the benefits for a hospital to divert this wastestream product from landfill space. Medical surplus includes, but is not limited to, expired and unsterile product, which by FDA regulation is unusable in American hospitals. Such surplus, however, retains functional use and can be repurposed in under-supplied hospitals and medical facilities in the developing world.
