Abstract

“The line shape of pressure-broadened spectral lines can be represented by the modified Lorentz expression $\alpha = \alpha_{o}(\Delta \nu)^{2}[|\nu - \nu_{o}|^\eta + (\Delta \nu)^{2}]^{-1}$. An investigation of the value of $\eta$ for the R(4) spectral line of the fundamental band of HF has been made to determine the variation of as a function of distance from line center. The range $\eta$ was found to be $\eta = 2.00$ for $|\nu - \nu_{0}| < 2 cm^{1}, \eta = 1.82 \pm .03$ for $| \nu - \nu_{o}|> 3 cm^{-1}$, and n varies linearly from 2.00 to $1.82 \pm .03$ for $2 cm^{-1} < | \nu - \nu_{o}| < 3 cm^{-1}$.”
