Abstract

The profile of the 992cm−1 Raman Line of C6H6 has been studied in the pure liquid and in solutions with CCl4 over the temperature range 252K to 295K. The results confirm that tumbling motions of the C6H6 molecule in the pure liquid are in the rotational diffusion limit. With increasing CCl4 concentration, these motions approach the free rotor limit. Support is found for Griffith’s view that an unusual vibrational relaxation mechanism operates in C6H6C6H6 collisions.
