Abstract
The Raman spectrum of BaClF has been obtained with an argon laser source. The observations are consistent with $D_{4h}$ symmetry with barium ions at $C_{4v}$ sites and chlorine and fluorine ions at $C_{2v}$ sites. Symmetry species for all of the even symmetry phonon modes have been determined by means of polarized Raman scattering from an x-ray oriented single crystal. All of the features assigned as first-order are observed at wave-number shifts less than $300 cm^{-1}$, demonstrating the weak bonding in BaClF.
