Abstract
Laser techniques are being used to study chemical reactions thought to be of importance in hydrocarbon combustion. Pulsed ultraviolet lasers are used to produce high concentrations of selected radicals by photo-dissociation. Radical-molecule reactions are studied by monitoring the disappearance of radicals or appearance of products by laser induces fluorescence using a second probe laser. Reaction kinetics are measured and in some cases reaction mechanisms are determined. Radical species include $C_{2} (a^{3}\Pi), C_{2} (x^{1} \Sigma), C_{2} O (\tilde{x}\; ^{3} \Sigma^{-}), CH_{3} O(\tilde{x}^{2} E)$ and $O(^{1}D)$. Reaction gases include $O_{2}, CO_{2}, H_{2}, CH_{4}$, NO and saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. Reaction studies at room temperature are being extended to higher temperatures in oven experiments. Results can be programed into reaction rate libraries and used to computer model combustion reactions.
