Abstract

The Raman and infrared spectra of the liquid addition compound formed between boron trifluoride and dimethyl sulfide have been obtained. Infrared measurements have been made from 4000 to 200cm−1 and Raman measurements from 4000 to 100cm−1. Samples containing enriched 10B or 11B have been synthesized and the isotopic frequency shifts recorded. Assignments of the observed vibrational bands have been made and analogies with the spectra of BF3O(CH3)2 have been pointed out. Isotopic partition function ratios have been tabulated and the equilibrium constant for boron isotope exchange between BF3S(CH3)2 and BF3 has been calculated and compared with experimental values. Research sponsored by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission under contract with the Union Carbide Corporation.
