Abstract

Russell says that the ultimate objection to Leibniz's monadism will lie in the incompatibility of 3 of his premises: that every proposition has a subject and predicate, that the Ego is a substance, and that perception yields knowledge of an external world. This criticism, according to Russell, applies to all ontological systems which maintain that the only things which exist are substances and their characteristics. This work will examine Russell's understanding of Leibniz's system. It will show how all four accounts of space which Russell considers possible are necessarily incompatible with Leibniz's system. It will then address possible criticisms of Russell's view, and show how they fail to satisfactorily refute him.
