Abstract

This work demonstrates the feasibility of measuring ion drift velocities in the positive column of a DC glow discharge from observed shifts in the microwave absorption frequency due to the Doppler effects. Combined with electric field measurements of the positive column, the drift velocity can be converted to the ion mobility. Improvements in both the ion production techniques and the frequency measurement precision have made it possible to obtain mobility data on $HCO^{+}$ in Ar and $H_{2}$, which has been found to be quite sensitive to discharge conditions, e.g., flow rate, pressure, and input gas mixtures. These measurements have yielded an accurate rest frequency, as well as suggesting a low value for the random velocity of the ion.
