Abstract

The vibrational transition of $NO_{2}$ centered at 5933.4 {\AA} has been extensively analyzed by laser-induced fluorescence using a pulsed tunable dye $laser.^{1}$ The upper state involved is identified as a $^{2}B_{2}$ electronic state having $a_{1}$ vibrational symmetry. The $K = 0, 1, 2$ sub-bands of this system have been located and are characterized by abrupt discontinuities in the energy level pattern pointing to the presence of localized perturbations. The spin components of a large number of transitions have been identified and the upper state spin splittings deduced. The high resolution absorption spectrum of this band shows an anomalous intensity distribution with the intensity falling off prematurely as a function of both N and K. Lifetimes for representative rotational states of the band have also been obtained.
