Abstract

High-resolution laboratory spectra of the vibration-rotation bands $\upsilon_{3}, 2\upsilon_{1}$ and $3\upsilon_{3}$ of $^{12}CH_{4}$ and $^{13}CH_{4}$ have been analyzed. A large number of measured line strengths in these bands have been reduced to a small set of spectroscopic parameters, principally the respective transition electric-dipole moments $\nu$. The values of these parameters, currently derived, will be presented for the three bands of each isotopic species. These have been used to calculate a variety of unmeasured line intensities. The same results have also been used to project out absolute band intensities. Applications of these results to the atmospheres of the outer planets, e.g., Jupiter and Saturn, at low temperatures will be discussed.
