Abstract
Most molecules which undergo photochemistry produce reactants in the ground state. An interesting anomaly is tetramethyl dioxetane[FIGURE] which dissociates into two acetone molecules, at least one of which is in an excited electronic state. Using a single six picosecond pulse to excite the dioxetane and recording the fluorescence with a streak camera, we observed a rise time less than 10 picoseconds and a decay identical to that of acetone. The possibility of a concerted decomposition being responsible for the observed kinetics will be discussed.
