Abstract

The infrared and Raman spectra of NH4XO4 and NO4XO4 (X = I, Re) have been obtained. The splittings and number of bands are consistent with site and factor group predictions for Scheelite-type crystals. The ammonium fundamentals and lattice modes have been identified, and a study of the torsional mode as a function of temperature was made in order to study “free” rotation of the ammonium group. The results are used to explain the anomalous temperature dependence of the Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) frequencies, and the signal loss in NH4ReO4 at 257K.
