Abstract

The Semester of Service (SOS) provides Honors and Scholars students the opportunity to participate in a semester long service project that focuses on a social issue. Participants investigate and reflect upon the issue while serving the local community. The participants experience includes bi-weekly meetings, readings, and volunteering at a service site weekly. The bi-weekly meetings are designed for learning more about the topic through group discussion on experience at service sites, guest speakers and articles.

Description

IMPACT. 1: Students examine the social issue of mental health awareness, food security or educational access and how it affects the Columbus and/or campus community and can describe 3-5 prominent constituents. -- 2. Students are enabled to relate the knowledge gained through bi-weekly meetings and readings to their roles at their assigned service site promoting a transformational involvement and not transactional. -- 3. A reciprocal relationship between community organizations and OSU students is created resulting in meaningful ongoing partnerships.
