Abstract

The $77^{\circ} K$ phosphorescence and excitation spectra of pyrazine and other azines in ethanol with various amounts of water, acetic acid, chloroform or trifluoroethanol are presented. These molecules are shown to form 1:1 and 2:1 complexes with pyrazine and to severly reduce its phosphorescence quantum yield. Solvent deuteration enhances the quantum yields considerably. Pyrazine is also shown to form 1:1 and 2:1 complexes with alkali metal ions in ethanol. The stability constants for these complexes will be presented. The photophysical properties of these complexes will be discussed.
