Abstract
The dephasing time of the fundamental vibrational mode of solid $\alpha-N_{2}$ at temperatures in the vicinity of $2^{\circ}\, K$ has been measured using the time resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering technique. The experiments involve two conventional $N_{2}$ pumped dye lasers, one to create the coherent state at $2330\, cm^{-1}$ and the other to probe this state at various delay times in the nanosecond range. A special technique was used to produce solids with large optically clear areas, $>$ 10 $mm^{2}$ extending through the diameter of the sample. The temperature dependence of the dephasing times will be presented together with a brief discussion of the various competing processes that account for the observed results.
