Abstract

The microwave spectrum of methyl azide, $CH_{3}N_{3}$, has been investigated and $J 0\rightarrow 1$ and $1\rightarrow 2$ a-type transitions assigned. The barrier to internal rotation of the methyl group is $695 \pm 20$ cal/mole. Preliminary investigations of the Stark effect give $\mu^{2.}_{a} = 3.53 \pm .06D^{2}$ and $\mu^2_5 = 1.0 \pm 1.0 D^{2}$. Therefore it may be possible to observe and assign b-type lines. The spectrum is consistent with a $\angle CNN$ of $116-117^{\circ}, V(CN) = 1.46$, and the azide group found by Amble and $Dailey^{1}$ for $HN_{3}$.
