Abstract
Peroxyacetic acid is an interesting molelcule because it can be prepared chemically via ozonolysis from many different starting products, and hence is of some interest in atmospheric pollution--particularly so, because it is a strong oxidizing agent. Spectroscopically, one can imagine torsional motion about the C-O and O-O bonds as well as methyl torsion, and consequently the microwave spectrum is expected to be very rich and, indeed, this is the case. Other questions to be answered are the planarity of the peroxy group, and the vibrational assignment of the modes associated with the strong internal hydrogen bond.
