Abstract
Although double quantum transitions have been known for many years, they have not been much used in the analysis of high resolution n.m.r. spectra. They can be very useful for the determination of relative signs of J, the coupling constants. The method is often easier and more reliable than precise analysis of normal spectra and, in contrast to the double resonance methods, does not require special equipment. Some examples will be given. Shimizu and Fujiwara (J. Chem. Phys. 1961, 34, 1501) have suggested a multiple quantum method for determining absolute signs of J. Unfortunately their interesting suggestion is invalid for a system of two spins each of $I = {^{1}}/_{2}$ as will be discussed.
