Abstract

In an attempt to ascertain the effect of a strongly directive substituent on the geometry of the benzene molecule, a determination of the structure of benzonitrile, $C_{6}H_{5}CN$, has been nearly completed. Each of the nine non-equivalent atoms has been isotopically substituted, making possible a complete $r_{s}$ structural determination. Initial results show a C-N bond distance of 1.459 {\AA}: further results will be presented.
