Abstract

Induced dipole absorption is expected and known to be very weak. However, we find a very strong absorption band in SiC crystals although only induced dipole absorption should be observed in this case. It can be shown that induced dipole absorption may be of the same order of magnitude as normal dipole absorption, depending on the difference of the polarizabilities of the different atoms. But in many cases (atoms with equal polarizabilities) the contributions from the several induced dipoles cancel out, either because of symmetry or because of interference effects.
