Abstract
Matrix isolation has proven to be a very useful technique for the characterization of molecular ions. Ions produced by photoionization techniques are trapped in the an excess of an inert gas such as argon for study with conventional spectroscopic instrumentation. Sharp spectra for matrix isolated ions in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum provide information pertaining to molecular geometry, bonding and photochemistry which cannot be obtained by other commonly employed techniques for ion study. Various methods for ion production including an electric are technique and a multiphoton ionization process will be discussed. In addition, the application of high resolution ($0.2 cm^{-1}$) Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, as it pertains to the study of molecular ions, will be discussed.
