Abstract

Improved spectra of the four condensed phases of oxygen have been obtained in the intermolecular region using laser excitation. The temperature dependence of the lattice mode frequencies and the amplitude of the torsional motion will be discussed. The intensities of the librational lattice modes relative to the molecular stretching vibration have been measured in the ordered phases of oxygen and other molecular crystals. The results will be compared to calculations based on an oriented gas model.
