Abstract
Many inorganic halides dissolve readily in alcohols. It is generally assumed that solvation occurs through a coordination of the oxygen of the alcohol with the inorganic cation. As a result of the attraction of the cation for the electrons of the oxygen atom, the force constant of the OH bond is reduced. The characteristic hydroxyl frequency increases, the tendency to form hydrogen bonds increases, and the reactivity of the OH group increases. By studying dilute solutions of alcohols coordinated with certain metal halides in carbon tetrachloride and applying mass action principles, it is possible to learn much about the coordinate bond as well as the hydrogen bond.
