Abstract
Dr. Armitage carried papers as a boy during the Great Depression to help support the family. In High School, he was a member of the Debate Team, and majored in Spanish at Oberlin. He continued graduate work at Ohio State University.
Dr. Armitage was appointed Acting Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1955. He describes the teaching of Spanish at the Lazarus store and for a daily language program on WOSU.
The Anvil and Bellows Club, Faculty Club and the Graduate School (especially Alice Moran) were discussed. Rose Bowl issues in the 1950’s are described in detail. The Speaker’s Rule in the 1950’s caused some faculty to be disappointed in the University administrations. The conflict between Jack Fuller and Woody Hayes and then the actions that lead to Woody being fired are recalled. His experiences as University Ombudsman are summarized. This had a discussion on University athletics.
Dr. Armitage’s last administrative position was Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of San Diego, California.
The interview includes many of the conflicts within and between the alumni and faculty. The Faculty Club is described in a very positive light.
