Abstract

Osmium tetroxide is a spherical top whose oxygen nuclei are positioned in a tetrahedral array. In the case of identical nuclei with spin zero, the Pauli exclusion principle requires that the quantum wave functions be totally symmetric with respect to an interchange of oxygen nuclei appropriate to the tetrahedral symmetry group. As the spin functions are perforce symmetric, the rotational functions are strictly limited (up to an inversion) to representations of symmetry A. Consequences for the spectroscopy of osmium tetroxide in both the quantum and the nearly classical regimes are explored.
