Abstract

Stark effect measurements have been carried out on the $0^{4} - 0 (3967 {\AA})$ and $1^{+} - 0 (3884-{\AA})$ bands of the $^{3}A_{2} - ^{1}A_{1} (\pi^{*} - n)$ transition of formaldehyde. The experiments were performed with electric fields from 0-27 kV/cm and in parallel ($\Delta M=0)$ and perpendicular $(\Delta M = \pm 1)$ polarisations. From the observed Stark splittings or Stark broadenings of the rotational lines, the dipole moment of formaldehyde in its first excited triplet state has been evaluated.
