Abstract

This work utilizes MRR intensity law $measurements^{1}$ to compare the change in 1/t and $1/\tau$ for a given absorbing species as the primary source of broadening and relaxation was changed. Different impurity gases were used to change these rates. If the change in 1/t and $1/\tau$ is identical in all cases, it is likely that rotational relaxation and broadening processes are identical. There are certain experimental advantages to approaching the 1/t and $1/\tau$ equivalency issue in this manner. First, all data are taken at a single frequency, the transition frequency of the absorbing species. Second, changes in both 1/t and $1/\tau$ are calculated from precision attenuator differences which are accurate. Finally, no accurate pressure measurement is required. The results from several dilution experiments using different "probe" molecules will be discussed.
