Abstract

Lucy Caswell began her career at The Ohio State University in 1970 as the head of the Journalism Library. She interviewed for this position in May of 1970, when the Ohio State campus was closed due to the killings at Kent State. She remained in this position at the Journalism Library until 1975. In 1977, she was invited to assume a temporary position in the School of Journalism, with the objective of curating the work of Milton Caniff, a notable cartoonist whose papers had been donated to the School of Journalism in 1974. This curator position was supposed to last only two months, but Caswell ended up staying on, eventually retiring as the Founding Curator of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum in 2010. In this position, Caswell worked to secure important monetary donations and donations of artists’ work, and interviewed all the founding fathers of the Editorial Cartoonists Association. Caswell was also present for the founding of the Women’s Grassroots Network.
