Abstract
We extend previous studies on the fluorescence of $NO_{2}$ at low $pressures^{1,2}$ and as a function of $pressure^{3}$ to include the behavior of the inelastic scattering from $NO_{2}$ in a nitrogen atmosphere as a function of incident photon energy. This paper reports the inelastic scattering cross sections and depolarization ratios of the two principal $NO_{2}$ scattering peaks for each of four incident Argon laser lines. In addition, we will show the continuum scattering spectrum, corrected for instrumental quantum efficiency, for each of these laser pumps. The results indicate a departure from the $\nu^{4}$ scattering law by approximately a factor of five, over the narrow spectral range studied, for one of the scattering peaks. The scattering cross section of this peak is more than two orders of magnitude larger than the cross section for the Q-branch Raman scattering from $N_{2}$.
