Abstract
Effective substitution of coal and coal derived fuels for oil and natural gas in the utility and industrial sectors under the constraints of current utilization patterns and tightening environmental concerns requires the solution of a spectrum of combustion problems. Quantitative spectroscopic techniques play an important role in the evolution of improved engineering models and diagnostic tools required for the design and performance assessment of combustion equipment. This paper presents an overview of the rationale and programs of the Department of Energy’s Office of Coal Utilization in this research area.
