Abstract

The non-thermal distribution of population among vibrational states provides the required inversions for most molecular lasers. In electric discharges of molecules which contain H, C, and N atoms, population inversions among vibrational states of HCN are produced. The techniques of millimeter and submillimeter microwave spectroscopy have been used to study these states and their populations. Among other quantities, the absolute populations of vibrational states can be calculated and correlated with laser threshold conditions.
