Abstract

The vibrational spectrum of $B_{2}C_{2}$ has been observed for the first time in a Fourier transform infrared study of the products of vaporization of boron/carbon mixtures trapped in argon at 10 K. A frequency at $955.0 cm^{-1}$ of the global minimum structure, which is linear symmetric $(BC_{2} B)$, has been assigned to the $\nu_{3}(\sigma_{\nu})$ B-C stretching fundamental. This assignment is supported by $^{10}B_{1}\ ^{11} B$ and $^{13} C$ isotopic data and is in good agreement with the predictions of an {ab initio} study carried out by Rittby in collaboration with this work
