Abstract

The vibrational spectrum of linear $BC_{3}$ in argon has been observed for the first time by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. $BC_{3}$ was produced by condensation of the vapors from mixtures of boron and carbon around 3000 k, together with can overabundance of argon, onto a cold substrate maintained at 10 K. A frequency measured at $1512.5 cm^{-1}$ has been assigned to the $\nu_{2}(\sigma)B-C$ stretching fundamental of linear $^{10}BC_{3}$. This assignment is supported by $^{10} B, ^{11}B$ and $^{13}C$ isotopic data and is in good agreement with the predictions of an {ab initio} study carried out by Rittby in collaboration with this work.
